About Talyon

A specialist consultancy for business-critical Access systems

Talyon is founder-led and highly technical. Clients deal directly with the person doing the work.

Founder

Over 30 years of Microsoft Access experience

Talyon was founded by an experienced software developer specialising in business-critical database applications and legacy system modernisation.

That experience spans more than 30 years of Microsoft Access development, including work in critical sectors such as medical, aviation and defence, where systems have to be dependable and mistakes are costly.

Talyon combines knowledge of older Microsoft technologies with modern software-development techniques. Many developers understand modern technology but have little experience of large legacy Access and VBA applications. Talyon's specialist value is understanding both sides of the migration.

Modernising a legacy system requires more than knowing the destination technology. You also need to understand the system you're replacing.
Technical experience

Both ends of the journey

The experience behind Talyon covers the technologies legacy systems were built with and the ones they are moved to, along with the practical business of keeping multi-user operational software running while it changes.

Along the way Talyon has built up its own in-house tools and techniques that speed up development in Access and .NET, including upsizing and conversion work.

Approach

How Talyon works

Replacing a working Access application is not automatically the right solution. The approach is the same whatever the size of the system.

  1. Understand the existing systemRead the code and the data before forming a view.
  2. Identify risks and problemsSeparate what is urgent from what is merely untidy.
  3. Stabilise it where appropriateMake the system safe to rely on today.
  4. Improve performance and reliabilityFix causes rather than symptoms.
  5. Recommend sensible modernisation optionsIncluding the option to leave well alone.
  6. Migrate gradually when that reduces business riskIn stages, each one leaving a working system.

Working together

From small businesses to large organisations

With or without an IT department

Many businesses that rely on Access have no IT staff. Talyon deals directly with the owner or the people who use the system, in plain language. Where there is an in-house IT team, the work fits in with their standards, environments and change control.

Confidentiality

Access systems often hold commercially sensitive or personal data. A non-disclosure agreement can be put in place before any files are shared, and how the data is handled is agreed at the start.

Documentation and handover

Changes are documented as they are made, so the system can be supported afterwards by your own staff or by another developer. The aim is to reduce your dependence on any one person.
